How Do You Declutter Your Home Before Moving House?

25th June 2026

Moving house is one of the best opportunities you’ll ever have to reset. A fresh home, a fresh start, and if you do it right, far less clutter following you through the door. But decluttering before a move takes a deliberate plan. Without one, you’ll either pack everything out of overwhelm or waste days second-guessing every decision. As Sydney’s experienced removalists Sydney, we see the difference decluttering makes every single day. The clients who declutter well move faster, spend less, and settle into their new homes more comfortably.

Why Decluttering Before Your Move Actually Matters

Every item you move costs you something. It costs money in truck space and labour hours. It costs time in packing and unpacking. It costs energy in decisions at the other end about where it should go. Items you don’t genuinely need or love become a burden you carry from one home to another.

Decluttering before your move means fewer boxes, a smaller truck, a faster job, and a new home that feels intentional rather than cluttered from day one. It also reduces your removalist prices Sydney because there’s simply less to move.

Start Early and Work Room by Room

The biggest mistake people make is trying to declutter everything at once. It’s exhausting and leads to poor decisions. Instead, start at least four to six weeks before your move and tackle one room or one category at a time. Finish a space completely before moving to the next. This approach gives you a sense of progress and keeps the process manageable.

Start with the easiest areas: a spare room, a linen cupboard, a bookshelf. Leave the emotionally loaded spaces like childhood memorabilia or a partner’s belongings until you’re warmed up and in the right mindset.

Sort Everything Into Four Categories

As you work through each space, sort every item into one of four piles: keep, donate, sell, and discard. Be decisive. The keep pile should only contain items you genuinely use, need, or love. If an item hasn’t been touched in over a year and holds no particular sentimental value, it almost certainly belongs in one of the other three piles.

  • Keep: Items you use regularly or that hold real meaning
  • Donate: Good-condition items that can benefit someone else
  • Sell: Items of value worth selling on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace
  • Discard: Broken, worn-out, or genuinely useless items

Set Realistic Goals, Not a Single Big Day

Don’t try to declutter your entire home in a weekend. Set a timer for 30 to 60 minutes per session and stop when the timer goes off. Consistent daily sessions over several weeks are far more effective and less demoralising than one exhausting all-day effort. Celebrate each completed room or category. The momentum builds as you go.

If you’re struggling to let things go, ask yourself: does this item serve a real purpose in my new home? If the answer is no or you’re unsure, that’s your answer. Having removal boxes labelled and ready for your donate and sell piles makes the process much more organised.

Room-by-Room Decluttering Priorities

Living room: Evaluate each piece of furniture honestly. Do you use it? Does it fit your new space? Decorative pieces, magazines, DVDs, and media collections often harbour unnecessary volume. Go through each piece and let go of anything that doesn’t actively improve the room.

Kitchen: Check pantry expiry dates as you pack. Appliances you haven’t used in a year are unlikely to be used in the new home. Duplicate kitchen tools can usually be pared back significantly. Donate excess crockery and cookware rather than packing items that will sit in a box at the new house.

Bedroom and wardrobe: Clothing is one of the biggest sources of moving volume. Sort clothing by the 12-month rule: if you haven’t worn it in the past year, donate it. This is especially true for seasonal items, formal wear you no longer wear, and anything that no longer fits.

Garage and storage: These spaces are typically the most overwhelming. Tools you never use, sports equipment gathering dust, and decade-old boxes of miscellaneous items are common finds. Be practical and decisive here.

Digitise What You Can

Documents, certificates, old photos, DVDs, and even books can often be digitised rather than physically moved. Scan important papers and store them securely in the cloud. Photograph sentimental items if the physical object isn’t truly necessary to keep. Every item you can digitise is one fewer thing to pack, move, and find storage for in your new home.
