How to Disassemble a Bed Before a Move

01st April 2026

Moving house comes with a long list of tasks, and handling furniture is where things start to feel overwhelming. Beds are bulky and cannot move through tight spaces in one piece. That’s why learning how to disassemble a bed properly is such an important part of the moving process.

At We Move Group, we handle this often, from compact apartments with narrow staircases to family homes with custom-built frames. In this blog, we’ll take you through each step, from disassembling your bed to putting it back together once you’ve moved in.

A Practical Guide to Disassemble a Bed

Start with the Central Support and Crossbar

Start by removing the central support leg and crossbar underneath the bed. This step releases the tension across the frame, which makes the rest of the disassembly much easier and reduces the risk of parts shifting unexpectedly.

Use an Allen key to loosen each bolt by turning it counterclockwise with steady and controlled pressure.  Avoid rushing, as too much force can strip the bolts or damage your tools

Keep All Loose Components Together

Once the central support and crossbar are removed, place them in a designated spot where they won’t get in the way. Keeping all parts together from the start will save you time and frustration when it’s time to reassemble.

Store all small hardware in one clearly labelled bag or container, and consider taping or attaching it to a larger bed component like the headboard.

Remove the Side Rails

Next, move on to the side rails. Work on one side at a time, loosening each bolt gradually rather than removing one side completely at once. This keeps the frame stable while you’re working.

Once all bolts are loosened, carefully detach the rail and set it aside. Removing the side rail will release the slats or base, allowing you to lift them out without resistance.

Gather All Slats in One Stack

With the side rail removed, collect all the slats and place them together in one stack. Try to keep them aligned to avoid bending or putting pressure on individual pieces.

It’s best to place them on a soft surface like a mattress, rug, or blanket to prevent scratches on both the slats and your flooring. Once stacked, secure them with tape or wrap so they stay compact and easy to carry.

Remove the Second Side Rail

Repeat the same process on the remaining side rail. Carefully loosen the bolts, remove the rail, and place it with the first one.

Group both rails together and secure them with tape or wrap to keep them from shifting around. If the rails are metal, adding padding is especially important to avoid damage to nearby items.

Keep the Hardware Easy to Find

Before finishing up, take time to double-check that all bolts, screws, and fittings have been collected. It’s easy to miss a small piece, especially during a busy move.

As mentioned previously, keep everything in a labelled bag and attach it securely to a larger bed component. This way, when it’s time to reassemble, you won’t have to search through boxes to find what you need.

Keep the Headboard and Footboard Protected

If you’re leaving the headboard or footboard leaning against a wall, add a layer of protection behind them. Placing a towel, blanket, or piece of cardboard between the bed and the wall helps prevent scuff marks.

Transporting Your Bed Safely During a Move

Once your bed has been disassembled and packed, the way you load it into the truck plays a major role in preventing damage. Follow these steps to transport your bed safely:

  • Keep slats, rails, headboard, footboard, and hardware in one area of the truck.
  • Place slats, side rails, and base panels flat against the walls of the truck.
  • Stand headboards and footboards upright against the truck wall. Make sure they are stable and not leaning at awkward angles that could cause them to fall.
  • Use straps or ropes around the bed components to keep them in place.
  • Do not place boxes or heavy furniture on top of bed parts.
  • Use protective wrap between components to prevent scratches and friction during the move.
  • Ensure the bag with screws and bolts is attached to a bed component or placed in a clearly labelled spot so it doesn’t get lost.

That said, this is where having experienced removalists Sydney on your side makes things much easier. Instead of trying to figure out how to position and secure everything, a professional team takes care of it right from the start.

They know how to position furniture to prevent movement, protect fragile components, and maximise every bit of space in the truck.

How to Reassemble a Bed After Moving

Set Up the Headboard and Footboard

Start by positioning the headboard and footboard where you want the bed to sit. Make sure they’re aligned properly and facing the right direction before attaching anything. It’s easier to adjust their placement now than once the full frame is assembled.

Reattach the Side Rails

Next, connect the side rails to the headboard and footboard. Line up the brackets or bolt holes and secure them loosely at first, then tighten everything once both sides are in place. This helps keep the frame even and stable.

Install the Centre Support and Crossbar

Once the outer frame is standing, reinstall the central support beam and support leg. Make sure it’s centred and securely attached, as it plays a key role in keeping the bed stable and properly supported.

Place the Slats Back In

Lay the slats evenly across the frame. Make sure they sit securely in their designated slots or holders. Keep the spacing consistent so the mattress is properly supported and doesn’t sag.

Put the Mattress Back On

Finish by placing the mattress back onto the frame. Adjust it so it sits evenly on all sides, and give the bed a quick check to make sure everything feels stable and secure before use.

Conclusion

Disassembling and reassembling a bed is simple when you follow our guide. With the right preparation and careful handling, you can protect your furniture and have everything set up properly in your new home.
