Pets don’t understand what’s happening on moving day. To them, their world is suddenly being dismantled. Strangers are carrying furniture past them. Their safe spots are disappearing. The smells are wrong. If you’re working with a removalist in Sydney and you have a dog, cat, bird, or any other animal in the house, planning around your pet is just as important as planning around your furniture.
Animals are creatures of routine and territory. Moving disrupts both. Dogs may become anxious, bark more than usual, or try to escape. Cats often hide, stop eating, or become aggressive when their environment changes. Even birds and small animals can become stressed when their cages are moved and their surroundings look unfamiliar.
The good news is that with the right preparation, most pets adapt to a new home within a few days to a few weeks. The key is managing the transition so the move itself doesn’t become a traumatic event.
If you pack over several days or weeks rather than all at once, your pet has time to adjust to the gradual changes. Bringing boxes into the house and leaving them out beforehand allows your dog or cat to sniff them and get used to their presence before the chaos of moving day.
Feed your pet at the same times. Walk your dog on the same schedule. The more routine you maintain in the lead-up to the move, the less anxious your animal will be when the big day arrives.
This is critical and often forgotten. Update your pet’s microchip registration with your new address before you move, not after. If your pet bolts during the move (which happens more often than people expect), having current contact information dramatically improves the chance of getting them back quickly.
Before you bring your pet to the new property, do a quick walk-through to check for hazards: unsecured fencing, gaps in the yard, exposed wiring, toxic plants, or open pools. Fix these before your pet arrives.
Moving day is the highest-risk time for pets. Doors are constantly open, there are strangers in the house, and the usual furniture landmarks have disappeared. This is when animals bolt.
On moving day, put your pet in a room that the removalists won’t need to access, ideally with the door closed and a sign on it. Put their bed, food, water, and a familiar toy in the room with them. This keeps them contained, comfortable, and out of the way of the crew.
If your pet is particularly anxious or reactive, the kindest thing you can do is arrange for them to be somewhere else entirely on moving day. A trusted friend, family member, or a professional boarding service can take your pet for the day so you can focus on the move without worrying about their wellbeing.
Keep your pet’s bed, food bowls, favourite toys, and any comfort items at your current home until the very last load. When you arrive at the new property, set these up first before your pet enters the house. Having familiar smells in place immediately helps animals settle faster.
Never transport a pet in the removal truck. This should go without saying, but it’s worth stating clearly: pets must travel with you in a personal vehicle, in an appropriate carrier or secured in the back seat.
For cats, use a secure carrier with a familiar blanket inside. For dogs, use a secured harness or a crate depending on the size of the vehicle and the dog. Keep the car cool and plan for extra stops on longer journeys. Your furniture movers in Sydney will handle the truck, and you handle the animals.
Give your pet time to explore the new home on their own terms. For cats especially, don’t force interaction. Let them come out of their carrier when they’re ready and explore at their own pace. For dogs, a walk around the new neighbourhood helps them establish the territory and get used to the new smells.
For the first few days, keep the routine consistent. Same feeding times, same walk times, same bedtime. The familiarity of routine is what tells an animal that everything is okay.
If these signs persist beyond a week, it’s worth speaking with your vet. In some cases, short-term anti-anxiety medication can help a particularly stressed animal through the adjustment period.
