Choosing the wrong box size is one of the most common and easily avoidable mistakes people make when moving. Too small and you run out. Too large and boxes get overpacked, too heavy to lift safely, or items shift and break in transit. Getting the box sizes right from the start makes packing faster, loading safer, and unpacking far more manageable. As removalists Sydney with years of experience loading and unloading thousands of homes, we know exactly what goes in what. Here’s the practical guide you need.
There are three standard moving box sizes used in residential moves across Australia, plus a range of specialised boxes for specific items. Each size has a purpose, and using the right one protects your belongings and makes the job easier for everyone involved.
Small boxes, often called book boxes, measure approximately 403mm x 301mm x 330mm and hold around 40 litres. Don’t let the name mislead you into thinking they’re only for books. Small boxes are designed specifically for items that are compact but heavy, because limiting the size of the box limits how much weight can go in, making them much safer to carry.
Use small boxes for: books, tools, canned goods, CDs and DVDs, kitchen appliances like toasters and coffee machines, glass jars, and small electronics. Packing any of these into a large box will result in a box that’s impossible to lift without risking injury to yourself or your removalists.
Medium boxes measure approximately 406mm x 298mm x 431mm and hold around 52 litres. These are the most commonly used box in any residential move because they strike the right balance between volume and manageable weight. They’re strong enough to handle a wide range of household items and easy enough to carry without straining.
Use medium boxes for: kitchenware, plates and bowls (when properly wrapped), children’s toys, clothing folded flat, towels and linens, small decorative items, and general household goods. If you’re unsure which size to reach for, the medium box is almost always the right answer.
We Move Group’s removal boxes include medium cartons in bundles sized to your move, with delivery directly to your door across Sydney.
Large boxes, also known as tea chests, measure approximately 431mm x 406mm x 596mm and hold around 104 litres. They’re excellent for items that take up a lot of space but weigh very little. The key rule with large boxes is this: if it’s heavy, it doesn’t go in a large box.
Use large boxes for: pillows, doonas and blankets, lampshades, large soft toys, decorative cushions, lightly packed clothing on hangers (folded loosely), and other lightweight bulky items. Never fill a large box entirely with books, crockery, or appliances. The box will fail or cause injury.
Some items need boxes engineered specifically for them. Using the wrong box for a specialised item is how TVs get cracked screens and wine bottles shatter on the truck. Our furniture removalist Sydney team always recommends the right specialised box for high-value items.
Kitchen: Mix of small boxes for heavy appliances and glass jars, medium boxes for cookware and pantry items, and dish pack boxes for crockery and glassware. Never mix heavy and fragile items in the same box.
Living room: Medium boxes for books and ornaments, large boxes for cushions and throws, picture boxes for framed art and mirrors. Use wardrobe boxes for any hanging storage in this room.
Bedroom: Large boxes for bedding and pillows, medium boxes for folded clothing and shoes, wardrobe boxes for hanging garments. Small boxes for jewellery, accessories, and anything with weight.
Home office: Small boxes for files and books, medium boxes for stationery and equipment, original packaging or TV boxes for monitors.
